In the Belly of the Beast 22

How I will pamper myself later. Note: this is not Flash. However, he suggested that I should treat him just the same.

I am in the throes of a huge techie project, for which I need to read these huge technical manuals.

Today, I’ve set aside hours and hours to push myself through the worst one.

Cross your fingers for me, and spit in the wind.

I may have crossed eyes when I’m finished.

How about you? Tackle any really technical things lately?

Level Playing Field? 25

One of the reasons I love the internet is the access to information. (Note to pirates: I believe information should be free. I don’t write information. I write entertainment. Whole different story.)

I can read the blogs of industry leaders I’ve always admired, find an obscure part for my washer, and learn how to fix my Roomba vacuum. I can talk with readers around the world. I can order almost anything – even ice cream, which just cracks me up – get it in days, and save myself hours of shopping.

Plus, the internet has leveled the playing field.

Information that was “doctor’s eyes only” is now accessible to patients. The web has made it possible for me to challenge my doctor’s advice and do research on my own.

Social media has made it possible to tweet your congressman, blog about politicians, “like” the Facebook page of countless products and people.

Yet the internet elevates idiots, too.

For every good bit of information, I think there’s about five times the amount of dreck. Sometimes, it’s a game, trying to sort the good stuff from the bad.

If I do historical research on the web, I make a point of staying with sites that are either affiliated with universities or have some official function, such as government or historical websites. If I have to go further afield, I make sure every reference is backed up by two additional sources (that haven’t just copied the first).

Still, for all the bad advice and just plain wrong websites out there, I’m grateful for the internet. It’s made my life easier in lots of ways.

How about you? Has the internet made your life easier?
