I heard something the other day about how the Supreme Court writes their final arguments. The point was made that the act of writing his opinion, being required to marshal his arguments, often helps a justice come to his decision.
I can’t tell you how often I’ve done the same thing. I thought I felt one way about a subject, but by the time I wrote a blog post, I had either changed my mind or realized that I wasn’t as sure of my viewpoint as I’d thought.
The same thing happens when I’m writing in a certain character’s POV. All of a sudden, s/he does or says something I wasn’t expecting. I’m wondering if both instances are fruit of the same tree.
I’ve taken advantage of this weirdness in my personal life. Whenever I have a difficult decision to make, I write a short paragraph about why I’m choosing one side over another. It often helps to make my position cohesive.
How about you? Do you write to help decide your position on an issue?
